You ever read one of those articles that made you realize you were completely clueless about something you thought you had a fairly strong handle on?

Even though I may be a lifetime or two behind you, in knowledge.
You are showing that we all can learn something from time to time.

Speak for yourself… argh.

(I quit reading after a minute because I don’t even have a single clue about Java coding)

Woops I quoted my own thing instead of modifying it. Scuzi! I’m making a mess again…

LOL, it’s Javascript. It’s wholly unrelated to Java. They’re like apples and oranges. Java doesn’t even have a delete keyword.

And now I confirm that for me understanding has DontDelete attribute and remembering has no DontDelete.

It’s fucking frustrating to understand things you can’t remember. Like I understand Memento, but I can’t remember who was in it.

It’s also a pain in the ass to try to explain things you understand but can’t remember.

Bernoulli’s principle? Wat.

Perpendicular Pressure to Parallel Velocity principle? I remember that as Bernoulli’s principle. In fact there is nothing to remember because the mechanics are defined in the name. The closest shorthand for me is: That Misunderstanding About Why Planes Can Fly Which Does Not Take Into Account Upside Down Flight principle. And the shorthand (which we often use to confirm ideas) is longer than the other name.

So don’t feel bad. I did manage to get through the article, but don’t ask me to write tests for the ideas, because I won’t know if I remembered everything. I get it. I can just barely explain it.

See, I remember that as a great party trick. You cut a short length of straw, put the long length in a glass of vodka, put the short length on top of the straw at about a 45 degree angle, and blow into it. The perpendicular pressure (up) created by the parallel motion (across) of the air over the long straw causes the vodka to get sucked up the straw, and be areosoled out into the air in a very fine mist, perfect for spraying your buddies with.

It’s also an old style of disk drive, where the platter was floppy, and hung down when at rest. When it spun, the centrifugal force would cause it to rise up parallel to the read/write head, but a thin layer of air caused by the Bernoulli effect would prevent the head from touching the medium. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli_Box

It’s all about the allegory. Same thing with Venturi and all his effects too. I wouldn’t remember this stuff at all if it wasn’t for all my… err… air flow path designing experience… from wood shop… (ahem)

And I don’t want to hear about how centrifugal force is a fictitious force. Construct Newton’s laws in a rotating frame of reference and save me the speech.

LAL. That’s probably more popular (if you know it) than blowing smoke in people’s faces. It’s like that for me, too though. I do fine in rotating or twisting frame of reference and I can handle the local weirdness. But I would have trouble working rotating reference from non-rotating variables. Don’t change the rules on me, man.

That brings me to a peculiar concept: polar valuation of multiple inputs (Hilbert space even, or is it Dilbert space?). That 45 degree angle gets you equal horizontal and vertical values that together would add up to more than the original force at 45 degrees. But that’s not how we add forces. If I pull FLUX off, expect something really cool. Values of coins represented as angles rather than ratios. The minute differences between R = X + Y and R^2 = X^2 + Y^2 are within psychological limits for value gaps. But they would lead miners to search for opportunities as much as they search for exits to fiat. But we’ll do ratios first. Once that works well enough, we can go wild with this.

FWIW, You Suck at Photoshop was one of my favorite series ever. It would be cool if someone did a “Your suck at Programming” series, because I actually learned many useful tips watching YSAP.

I shamelessly stole the title from the series. LOVED the humor of that.

And yeah… not a bad idea. Maybe I will.
