Feathercoin daemon and wallet production version 0.17.0.2

[Solved] Feathercoins have dissapeared

  • | Tip Sebastiaan

All my coins have gone missing! I transferred my coins from a work PC to my new laptop. The feathercoinwallet on my laptop was still syncing the blockchain when I generated a new address to receive my coins. I copied the address to my work pc using google drive and transferred all the coins to my new wallet.

The laptop was downloading and installing several updates for windows 8 in the process, amongst which the update to windows 8.1

After finishing the updates i finished syncing the block chain of my new wallet, to find that the my newly generated address is no longer there!

The coins have been send from the wallet on my work pc but I cannot receive them on my laptop! What the hell happened here? How can I get my coins back?

The coins were send to this address: 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV

It wasn’t much but i painstakingly traded these coins up on vircurex, and really dont want to have to start all over.

    Any help appreciated!

    Sebastiaan

The address you said have coins :

    https://explorer.feathercoin.com/a/6vC7eRfrme

How much coins you sent ?

  • | Tip Sebastiaan

A 136 and change, exactly as it shows on the link. I knew the transfer was made, but will I ever be able to reach the coins in that address?

I reckon the windows update messed up the content of the user/appdata/roaming/feathercoin folder. is there a file in here from which i would be able to restore the address in my wallet?

    any help is appreciated!

How did you backup your wallet? Did you take a backup after generating a new address?

Let me know if the 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV is the new wallet address (new pc) and let me know if the new wallet run (is sync with the network ?) (Do you see the 0 balance ?)… you may be has a windows firewall lock…

I think windows does not touch folders out of the operating system and this folder is out of his jurisdiction…

Exactly in this folder live a file named “wallet.dat” ((let me know if you find it))

In this file you have your public address and your private keys. No more. The coins are pointed into the net (see the link). The coins are cabled / associated to the pubblic address.

In fact you need to EXTRACT your PRIVATE key from the wallet.dat and the coins become your automaticaly.

If you have extracted the private key and you have a new wallet into a new pc, you are sure to recover your coins.

Let me know if you find the wallet.dat file and if the wallet run (not necessary online and updated)

I did not back up the wallet, as it was busy syncing and was empty in any case. My plan was to backup after the coins had arrived. I have the wallet.dat but i am not sure what to do with it. I have made a backup of it so long. Currently the wallet is not syncing, its four hours behind. Im trying the firewall next.

Let me know if the 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV is the new wallet address (new pc)

Anyway if you have ONLY four hours behind sync your wallet, your wallet is working in progress.

If it’s running and syncing, you need to WAIT the sync completed.

After then let me know if you received or not your coins.

Let me know if the 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV is the new wallet address (new pc)

It is the address on the new pc

  • administrators | Tip MrWyrm

I think xonar’s diagnosis is correct, your wallet needs to sync before your coins will be visible.

    Thank you MrWyrm

Sebastiaan, please backup your wallet asap, with or without coins, and keep save your backup OUT of your pc (USB pen drive)

Keep in mind that when you backup your wallet, you SAVE ONLY the public&privatekeys, no more. Your coins are associated to your public address into the net, into the blocks story of ALL the peers into the net…

  • | Tip Sebastiaan

Thanks I have backed up the wallet.dat. Im going to try and sync again just. If this doesnt work, I should reinstall the client and replace the wallet.dat with my backup right? I still find it very strange that the newly generated address simply disspeared after the laptop rebooted. keeping my fingers crossed…

  • | Tip Sebastiaan

Ok the wallet is completely synced, and no coins. Address 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV does not appear on the receive list even though it was generated by this wallet. Now what…?

Thanks for the help sofar guys!

    Seb

p.s. the client is version v0.8.6-beta

    That is really bad!

In this folder all wallet data are stored, including your private keys, which are needed to send and receive coins.

If you can recover the old wallet.dat file in that folder, you should be able to recover the feathercoin address you send the coins to.

If not, I don’t know any procedure to recover your coins 😞

Good Morning Sebastiaan, welcome here again.

If your wallet are completed synced and no coins are into, please reach this condition :

    • Verify that your wallet completed sync with network
    • Verify that the 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV address are into your wallet (the address is into the wallet.dat file, place the correct wallet.dat into the folder)

Only when you reached these conditions, please follow these steps :

    • start feathercoin
    • open a console window in feathercoin (Debug-> console)
    • type **dumpprivkey **6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV
    • copy/note/write down the response, which is your private key for that address

(DO NOT POST PUBLIC YOUR PRIVATE KEY, KEEP IT SAFE AND SECRET)

Let me know when you are done these steps.

Sounds to me like the wallet.dat that had your 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV address in it has some how managed to get over written. I’m pretty certain a Windows 8.0 --> 8.1 upgrade would not cause this but will build a dev environment a little later today and see what happens if I have time.

I’m going to as some questions, I don’t think your stupid I just want to rule out the simple things in life because I am a very simple person 🙂

Did you change the user account/name you where logging onto the laptop with?

Did you reinstall the wallet after you generated the 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV address

Have you done a simple search of the hard disk for wallet.* (not wallet.dat) and can you post the results?

No joy, the address does not appear in the wallet and the console returns:

Private key for address 6vC7eRfrmeFhPQRzJidicDfjjN7Saii1VV is not known (code -4)

    No

    No

    The search is currently running

Search of the C drive returns two files:

the wallet.dat in the user/appdata/roaming/feathercoin folder and the backup I made of this file in my google drive folder. They are the same file so restoring the wallet.dat from my google drive is not goin to make a difference here.

Looks like the wallet.dat file dissapeared somewhere yesterday as I was doing the windows 8.1 upgrade. I’m running a Mcafee antivirus and firewall which came with this laptop, and was here most of the time, so I cannot assume foul play at this stage. (none of my colleques at work are to clued up on cryptocoins to heist my wallet anyway…

What i am wondering about: I did use ccleaner yesterday after the upgrade to clean out internet cache and windows tmp files. I also set windows environment variables to the same appdata folder. so it could be possible that ccleaner erased files from the folder. Unlikely though since some of the files in this folder are from yesterday morning. Ill run cc cleaner again to c what happens. Its probalbly a red herring here…

    sigh…

    :-\

  • | Tip Sebastiaan

Ok so I ran ccleaner and restarted the wallet, the blockchain information has now dissapeared and the wallet has to start syncing all over again. It’s currently 51 weeks behind. Im getting very worried that i must have messed this one up myself…

    😞

Will be with a student in the flightsim for the next hour and check back after that!
