Opinions on 7950 excessive fan RPMs - do I need to be worried?

Such sales tactics might work on some folks… I mean in some ways and for certain users I’m sure they are a good enough equivalent.
However, something also tells me this chap doesn’t understand what miners are putting the hardware through.
We only ended up with XFX cards because back in late Nov/early Dec just about everything was going out of stock. Back then I didn’t know anything either… the last gaming card I bought was a Voodoo 3 - haha ;)
Still, I’ve found their 280x to be painless enough. Although it doesn’t break 700Kh/s, that rig scrapes close to 1.4Mh/s with low ish temps/rpms and is very quiet.
I see you’re a 270x fan sir. I’m glad you put that out there, since I’ll probably shift the 7950’s soon (depending on how much it costs to fit after market cooling).

Yeah you would be surprised how many people selling IT hardware in Melbourne say to me “I don’t understand this Bitcoin thing…” I mean WTF? You sell IT Hardware!!! You could be selling mining packs like NewEgg do…
I was actually trying to get my hands on 280x Toxic’s, but of course they were sold out everywhere, I settled for the Sapphire 280x Vapour-X which was $415 vs $489 for the Toxic. 735 Kh/s vs 800 Kh/s.
Purely because I had to try a toxic (because they looked so damn s3xy as well) I grabbed some 270x’s… It was instant love… I’m taking delivery of the final 18 from the Australian Distributor on Thursday lol, no ETA on any more.
I’m not going to go around to various suppliers and scoop up whatever stock levels they have, I’m sick and tired of buying GPU’s that have already been messed with after the restocking process, so I’m sticking to one supplier because they always sell completely brand new kit.

Let the XFX run until the fans die.
Try to get them RMA´d, if you dont have that option.
You could do like me and just replace the original fans with this:

Ran dead quiet at 60degrees. Still low hashrate though as with all XFX cards (7xxx series, dunno about the 2xx series)

I didn’t know they did! Thats a pretty cool move. Scan.co.uk now accept bitcoin as payment, so it seems these retailers are starting to seriously recognise the crypto scene.

haha awesome! You’re braver than me bud!
If I replace these 7950’s with 270x, presumably I’ll need 3 x to get a similar hash rate?

Thanks for the link, I think this might be the best bet.
My main concern is one of safety. I’m not ‘that’ bothered about the cards themselves, but if they melt down and spit flames… thats what worries really me. The horror stories don’t make me sleep easy with miners in the basement.

3 x 270x Toxics would give you 1.5Mh/s running normal Scrypt and Linux.
If you’re a windows guy then 1.45, you gotta take the clock down a little from 1175 to 1160.
-
Thanks for tip off, I think this might be the way to go.
Actually a massive Linux nut, but setup the miners Win because I’m mining with a friend who can barely use a computer at all! haha

I just clicked this link, almost had to have a quiet moment to myself… They look awesome…
Got some more details? Are they really quieter? Did you notice any difference in temps?

According to the link they can drop up to 18C off a 7970.
I’d be happy to hear svennand’s thoughts on them too.
They’re about 30 quid a shot, which is pretty reasonably priced I think!

They are amazing.
used em as replacement for my fans on the XFX 7970.full load @60degree and you hardly heared it at all. not louder than my 140mm case fans:)
Soo much better than all other standard coolers ive tried, that includes Sapphire Toxic, Asus Matrix, Gigabyte Windforce 3X etc.
Its pretty weird that not an brand just pay arctic the license for that solution and implement it on their topend card…
-
So what chassis is the 7970 in new world terms? 280x? What new world cards will they fit on?
Since I sold my crate of 290x’s I can now sit in the warehouse without constantly feeling I’m in Guantanamo Bay experiencing Fan Torture by my captors… Still, I could improve the noise further with some of these…

The have an own one for 280X

Doh! Thank you my friend, for someone that is sitting next to their farm all day this is absolutely essential.
