Can we part of this? Scrub that, something similar, can’t afford $40.

I have moved Severino’s work on the ‘Merchant Guide’ to Development. It is related to the web site development, can members have a look?.

I have stewed over these thoughts for a few days now, and I’m not 100% keen on the direction we are taking. I’ll try to post my thoughts as lucidly as possible, bit tired.

What I think the goals are:

1: A modern looking website that stands head and shoulders with our peers. If we can looking down on them.
2: A CMS system that makes content creation simple and professional for all wishing to be involved.
3: A CMS system that publishes all content into a common unifying theme. Forums, tools, blogs, pages, guides, maps and anything else you care to imagine.
4: A CMS built around strong web standards that are supported by good CSS, functional responsive design and has access to hundreds of class act plugins.
5: A future proof infrastructure that will allow fast deployment of future ideas and technologies so that we don’t have to do this all again in the not too distant future.

I don’t think there is anything to disagree with in those points, although some may wish to add to them.

I also don’t think we would disagree that a well supported CMS is key to the success to this endeavor. There are 3 that I would choose from. It seems WordPress is the current favourite.

That said we need to focus the design concepts around how they fit in to a responsive (desktop, mobile, tablet, web tv etc) model and how all pages will render.

I’ve not seen any great examples of this.

The current best choice (from what I can tell from reading comments in this thread) is okay from a mock up.

The black/dark background with light text is the wrong direction imho. I would like to see how a forum or article is going to fit into that style? Light text on a dark background is a big no for content rich pages. Do you plan to flip the colours when there is a need? That option would be daft and create contrast issues with an overall theme. It would also lend it self to needing two themes created and a plugin created or installed to style each page as needed.

My suggestion is we use the current theme on the reboot site.

Don’t look at it in it’s current form. At all. Every single aspect of the page can be edited from colours to fonts. It can be made to look like any creation you care to dream of. It can be done without sliders or with sliders. The theme will then transfer to every page you create, every plugin you install, every tool we hard code via custom pages.

It has a wealth of content rich and jquery enabled shortcodes.

It is built with Mailchimp and Twitter in mind.

I have researched using it with a new fully automated version of our local maps… allowing users to fully submit, edit and remove their own pins with unlimited categories. No longer a need to have an email sent in order for someone to physically add a pin.

I stress again, it can look like any theme you care to imagine without the need of paying someone to do this who will only provide a tiny fraction of the functionality at an exuberant cost.

It has a well supported forum that has 150 specific plugins for this alone. It also has a migration tool specific to the current forum we use to the new potential forum.

The shortcodes are rich and diverse, allowing users to create professional pages and articles with ease.

I really don’t understand why we are re-creating the wheel here. I very honestly feel that any commission we farm out will fall far short of what the current framework offers. In fact I know it will fall far short.

I am a little concerned that the site redesign is going to move on without considering anything other than how the front page looks. I’d like to see some more research and suggestions on the overall site theme and what tools we use to make them work.

Has the template been decided on and farmed out already? Or are we still working on this?

I agree with what you’re saying above, but please define “It”. I wasn’t sure after reading, thanks!

    Sloppy grammar… sorry.

The CMS, Wordpress, has a well supported forum (BBpress) that has 150 specific plugins. The forum also has a migration tool specific to the current forum we use (SMF) to the new potential forum (BBpress).

I have added review web site security.

Presenting people with the download button before explaining what it is they’re downloading and why doesn’t seem nearly as newbie friendly.
Hm, maybe have it a bit further down? Or at least have it after the blurb or “why FTC, where get FTC, where spend FTC” section?
Yes, I think you have it exactly right. The 3 blurbs first, then the downloads.
Could the download section be improved to be “Get a wallet” section? Introduce different options… also mobile, paper, web? I personally like how different options are introduced on bitcoin’s web page.
Pete (@555) our UX designer advised tailoring the mobile experience so that the wallet download took them to the Google Play store if they were on Android and point them somewhere else if on iPhone. That way we aren’t wasting people’s time. I like home pages that are sign posts to popular questions.

I agree with all of those. I love what you did on the demo site, did you see my video?
Quite.
I’ve not seen any great examples of this.
Sev has put forward some designs but so far he is the only one. I would love to see some others come up with alternatives so that we can have a discussion about what we like. It’s important we get a design that represents us all.
The black/dark background with light text is the wrong direction imho. I would like to see how a forum or article is going to fit into that style? Light text on a dark background is a big no for content rich pages.
I have the same concern. I spoke to Pete (@555) about it and he felt that it would be simple to do a variation on the theme for content rich pages. I also asked @Sev to come up with lighter versions. So far this is the only option we have so if you have some ideas I would love to see some.
My suggestion is we use the current theme on the reboot site.
Thus far my plan has been to use it.
I really don’t understand why we are re-creating the wheel here. I very honestly feel that any commission we farm out will fall far short of what the current framework offers. In fact I know it will fall far short.
I am not sure what you mean by farming out. @Sev and @555 were introduced to Feathercoin via the SMS Wallet over teh summer. They were already part of the community although Peter was not active on the forums. Sev was the only one who put forward a design so that’s all we have to go on right now. You put forward a fantastic CMS which I love and plan to use.

In terms of paying, it’s a case of basic economics. We can’t expect people to work for free because in reality there is no such thing. When people say free they usually mean they are passing the cost on to someone else. It also tends to favour people who are independently wealthy and deprives poorer folk of opportunities.

Also having asked around it doesn’t sound like this is going to cost very much so if you have different information I need to know. I think the cost of having the website staying as it is is really really hurting us. It is the number one complaint we get and doesn’t do us justice. Every day it remains is a wasted opportunity.
I am a little concerned that the site redesign is going to move on without considering anything other than how the front page looks.
Yeah we need to look at the whole site, @555 has given us some free feedback on that and it needs to be fed in to this discussion but I didn’t want to crowd the thread.
Has the template been decided on and farmed out already? Or are we still working on this?
No and yes. 🙂

    Thanks for the reply Chris.

With the recent malarkey over the forums and a very brief chat with Pete… I agree that the forums may have to be BB. There should be a ready made bridge that ties WP to BB. Porting the existing forum may be an issue though unless someone can find/create a migrate or export script.

Cool. Sev has done a lighter themed version of his design. I am going to ask him to put it up here or I could put it in the Google doc.

Email it if you want. I can then show you how the current theme can be made to look like it. Look forward to seeing it.

Okay I will give that some attention over the next couple of days. Thanks

Can you find out what type face was used in that please Chris. Also can I have a copy of the mining rig image with out the text overlay.

It’s not as bold. I liked that it was bold. But they both do the job well. I feel like the image isn’t as good on the light background, and perhaps that’s what’s throwing the whole thing off. It worked great on the dark background, but it’s too dark for the light background.

I’m going to do a fresh install of WP and the nuts n bolts. Give me till Sunday to get a taster ready and some Jquery effects added to those circles.

I will also delete all users, clean install of the DB and all that jazz.

I have had a look at the theme in general and most of that can be done, though the navigation bar will be moved to the top of the slider.

Hoping to attempt a phpBB bridge as well. If you can ask Pete when you chat next where we are on the forum options and if he know how to export all content to phpBB? I think that was the one he wanted to try.

I don’t think dark backgrounds are wise for any site, especially content rich ones. As for the pic that can be swapped out for anything else at any time.

The new design with the computer hardware isn’t very encouraging for non techies and the general public at large.

Please remember that we’re also trying to engage the general population, merchants, media outlets as well as miners.
There has to be an accessibility to the subject with an emphasis on trading the currency for goods and services.

These are not criticisms, just observations.
A simple, clean - non tech specific landing page which is informative; in my opinion would be much more inviting.
I don’t think the inside of a mining rig is interesting enough and may indeed put off people who just want a way out of FIAT or Gold.

It’s mostly Comfortaa, with Helvetica for some of the smaller body text. Comfortaa is available on Google Fonts.

That’s just a placeholder photo we’re using for now. There will be a carousel/slider of more community/human oriented photos to go there.

I love that image but I would like it to be content produced by this community, I think I mentioned it in a thread above. Like Netnerd’s coins, the Oxford Blue etc.

I think we have a great opportunity to bring the tech community together with local communities and older generations etc.
