DVI dummy plugs

Dvi dummy plugs, what are they used for? I know there a hardware trick to fool an os into thinking a monitor is attached, but why would you need to use one?

Sometimes when you want to run a server on consumer hardware, the BIOS won’t allow boot if there is no monitor attached, having the dummy will allow the OS to boot and be controlled through ssh for example.

[/quote]I know I used them when I temporary mined on my Windows OS > Dev Rig > Gaming Rig because I couldn’t get cgminer to mine on all of the cards as Windows was not recognising all of them :-\ - Not sure if it was user error on my part, but the problem was solved in a couple of mins with 6 resistors and 2 x dvi/vga plugs.
But I didn’t need too bother with them when I set up my 24/7 miner on a Linux OS.

I - until recently - had my 5850 and my cpu mining, and if I disconnected the 5850 monitor cable, I would see cgminer stop hashing completely on the second monitor.
I think, as far as I can tell, you need the dummy plug to tell the machine that it’s got to keep the gpu active.
You’d think it wouldn’t need it, but that was by accident I found out, before I realised why you’d need one.

Cool, that has cleared things up for me.
I always have had a monitor plugged into 1 card but nothing in the other 3 cards.
So if I need my monitor for another use,(like a another rig) i might need a dummy plug to keep the miner running. 8) Thanks -

[/quote]I think if you are using the crossfire/sli cables then only one monitor is needed as all cards are linked via the cable and Windows will recognise all of the cards, my problem was I couldn’t use these link cables due to the required space between cards, I had them all crammed in an matx case on risers you see :o

You need dummy plugs for Catalyst 10.x and 11.x drivers. Otherwise you end up with OpenCL disabled on those devices.

weird, my windows 7 box is running headless with 3 - 5850s and no plugs. the only access i to it is through teamviewer…maybe it’s a driver issue 8)

You may or may not be aware of this.
Couple of adapters and some resistors.
Fools the card into thinking it has a load.
