Hahaa, you’re doomed now. It’s the curse of the block finders with low hash rates.
I found one, I thought WOOHOO!! and then I thought, Ohno… and I posted here saying nuclear war or something would break out.
Little did I know, it would be worse… far far worse.
My PSU blew up less than 12 hours later. A mighty Bang, and the fuse in the house blew. At 2am no less. Leaving me scratching my head and crying in the darkness, as I tried to use my mobile phone as a torch and find out if I’d blown anything on the mobo.
The acrid stench of burnt electrical components filling my nostrils. And in despair, I crawl back under the blankets and think “AHha I knew it… there goes my new rig, I have to buy parts to simply fix this now, and not upgrade.”
I was surprised to get a block too seeing as I only get about 380-400khash.
I’ve tested the board, using it now with an old 350watt psu and nothing connected as I can’t actually connect it, and I’ve yet to test my 5850.
at least it was a good psu. the sort that when it blows up, it blows up alone… unlike a cheap one where when it blows up, it takes victims with it. So I’m hopeful I can still use my gpu when I can get a new psu… :( which wont be anywhere near as good as the one I had.
Or the opposite will happen to you now, you’ll win the lottery. I sold my soul to the devil I guess. Oo

Ahh hopefully tomorrow I’ll have a new 750watt psu and be able to stick it all back together. It was supposed to be a new mobo for a cpu I just got, but it’ll have to wait. I do have 2 molex > pcie power cables I could try with the 350 watt psu… lol, I think I’ll not risk blowing up everything before tomorrow however.
snap, I do wish bitcoinstore would hurry up with the cpu though. almost 5 days now and no shipping, but they’re replying to email, so there’s no panic mode yet… yet…

My power supplies have never let me down. That’s probably because I disassemble them before putting up for job, throw away all junk manufacturers put inside and install real parts. I don’t care if it’s an overkill like to put eight 40A 100V Schottky diodes instead of four 20A 45V ones. I know it’s better to be safe than sorry and the result is worth the effort. My background in electrical engineering says never trust a consumer PSU no matter how wonderful it looks on the outside. Don’t trust the reviews either because they’re written by noobs usually who make no difference between buck, push-pull, half and full bridge.

good for you, most of us don’t have the $, time or knowledge to do that. Everyone wants awesome reliable electronics, we use what we can get. I have a 850W Thermaltake PSU for my everyday work PC that I also use for mining. It went unused mostly at 5% usage for a long time. Not at least it does the job it was intended to. -

Tho nothing I had should have pulled more than 750watts anyway, I think it was a fan I had connected. either way, the new case/psu is a lot cooler and with a new cpu heatsink is a hell of a lot better too, so I should be sorted…
I did work out that a 350watt psu is quite happy to run a hd5850 in 3d games like cod4, with 1 ssd drive and 1 ide 80gb. I had to use 2 molex to pcie power connectors to power it, but no probs. I didn’t try mining with it, just in case I did pop something lol
good to know as I just had it spare as a bit of junk…
whew… back to mining :)
