Hi Smoothie,

I have just got a new IP for the server this morning. I had hoped to make this move yesterday but the host does not give out new IP addresses anymore. They want the old address back ASAP.

I will post progress back here.

The nameservers for the Feathercoin domain have now been updated to use CloudFlare. It will take up to 24 hours for this to complete. There should be no disruption as the destination is the same, the only people who might have trouble getting here and ones who have been seen acting suspiciously on other sites. Some Tor exit nodes and some VPN IP addresses will no doubt be blocked. You can request that the block be listed on the blocked access message.

Once the nameservers are moved over we then move to our new IP address. Then we wait and see what things look like under DDOS :)

Bushstar, how much do they ask for their service and what guarantees are provided?

We are on the Professional plan running at medium protection for now, it if get hit by an attack we can give the ‘Help, I’m under attack’ setting a try. If the current level is not enough protection then we can start working our way towards the $2000 solutions :D

I have now pointed CloudFlare towards our new IP address. Tomorrow I will remove the old one from the server and ask the host to take it off the account altogether.

CloudFlare certainly believes that it has blocked several web spammers already.

Even the free cloudflare will mitigate ddos attacks. There aren’t any real guarantees, but their system acts as a proxy. The attacker would never see the feathercoin server IP and instead would be trying to DDoS a cloudflare server. When this happens, they simply reroute through a less busy server. Cloudflare is pretty awesome for many reasons, I mainly use it for the real time CDN functionality and Always Online sites. I use paid plans though, not the free one but for most people the free plan is great! http://www.cloudflare.com/plans

Edit: I know it doesn’t actually mention DDoS protection for the free and Pro level plans, but it still will mitigate most attacks just because of how their system is designed.

I agree it’s a pretty awesome service - Some geek porn on cloudflares capabilities = http://blog.cloudflare.com/the-ddos-that-almost-broke-the-internet

UKMark - I think it was overhyped to be honest. May have been some people trying to get free advertising.

Possibly, either way the underhyped capabilities are pretty damn good. :)

Okay. The transition to CloudFlare is finally complete. A slight hic up after removing the old IP and restarting the networking as it did not come back up. Rebooting the server from the control panel and everything is back online :)

Good job. Let’s see how it holds up the next time we get hit. =)

Thanks for the update, I must admit when the site went down before I thought I was gonna be eating my words about singing Cloudflares praises! :)
