Welcome to the community.
You have quite a few good questions.
A good start would be to look here where a very friendly chap is handing out free coins.

https://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php/topic,4212.0.html

Its not very easy yet to buy feathercoins yet or bitcoins for that matter. But you can mine them quite easily in fact if you have downloaded the wallet it has a simple miner built in. Essentially your getting coins in exchange for making your computer do some complex maths.

You can use exchanges like btc-e and deposit USD or Euros I think and trade them for feathercoins and then withdraw them into your wallet.

You will need your address from inside your wallet for others to send you coins but don’t worry this is the public part so no one can use it to get access to your coins.

If you explore the forum try support and then inside find guides it is a great place to start and has some very useful info.

If you need any more help just ask but your in good hands here this forum is full of very friendly helpful people in my opinion.

Thanks everybody for welcome.

Another noob question (apologies), OK, on the exchanges like btc-e + crypto-trade, the ftc are in pairs, like ftc/usd and ftc/btc, so say i buy these, does that mean I own the ftc’s or does that mean I own like an option.
So, for example if I buy 1000 ftc/usd, does that mean I now have 1000 ftc available to send to my walllet?
if not, how can i buy just plain ftc to own - other than mining?
thanks

Thanks

Hallo,

@ameisenmann
Depends on your energy price. I build my miner some days ago http://grow-feathercoin.blogspot.de/2013/11/first-feathercoin-miner-up-and-running.html. At the moment I’m paying some more than I earn. Adding the hardware price it really will depend on how FTC is developing. With this strong community I expect a change in the next months - depending if BTC will get back to normal.

If you have free power access - I would start mining.

Just keep your eye open on maybe upcoming scrypt asics or fgpa devices. Some vendors already announce that they are short before finishing their devices. As soon as such devices are available it will not make much sense to use your computer. Just like with Bitcoins the FTC security will increase that fast, that your power consumption is far to high.

I highly recommend buying the GPUs and PSU at ebay ;-)

@Ameisenmann:

Welcome to the forum :)

We have a German board here : http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php/board,61.0.html ;)

Regarding your question, you even can’t earn enough to get the power cost for your mining rigg financed with the FTC you mine in Germany, unless you have a source of free power.

If you invest upfront for a new mining rigg, it will not pay back based on the current exchange rates FTC/EUR.

So at the moment it’s more effective to either buy FTC of try to sell goods for FTC.

But…

If the exchange rate rises in the future, the picture will change completely.

I mine at work because Im the IT guy and get away with it. Free power for me is really the only reason why I mine.

Hey guys!
Thanks you for the fast and competent answers. :) Really appreciate it!

In the end everything is speculation. Some years ago when I first heard of Bitcoin the exchange rate was about 20,-$ / BTC. If I had known that it increases that much…
Also at 100,-$ I thought it won’t go any higher…And here we are :P

I think I will just sell some stuff for fun on the market. It is a great idea! (Already listed two auctions just now)
