Hi… Just getting started mining… I have an older machine with a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT video card. Is this good enough for mining?

Nvidias? not so much. Radeons have integer units which are faster.

With the miners most people use -cgminer and bfgminer- you won’t get good hash rates.

If you install the cuda packet from the NVIDIA website and use cudaminer, the results will be better, but in generally the Radeon cards have higher hashrates.

I had a look on here -https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
and your card is not looking great I would say it may be worth a try to see if you like the idea of mining (I started out trying CPU mining)
Then if you feel you are interested upgrade your card you will be able to see which card offers which speeds on that site.

Kris: if I install the cuda packet from the Nvidia site and use cudaminer, will the “miner” automatically use the CPU? I have a Intel Quad Core…

If you install cuda miner it will use your graphics card. I think the featgercoin wallet has a miner that will use your CPU.

oh that is intersting so what do i need to do in order to mine using the feather coin wallet app with my cpu. I did notice on the feather coin wallet it has a section that says " mining " you can pick solo or pool now i noticed when you click solo the only thing you can change is where it says " threads " between 1 - 99 " What would happen if i put like 2 thread cause im sure it is reffering to number of CPU you have right? and just click on start mining ?

Yeah connect it to the same pool u were using for your graphics card but using another worker. Pool will be better than solo. But yes threads refers to CPU cores although some of the newer ones can run more threads than cores (i3,i5,i7) so worth trying more threads and see if u get any benefits.

also would i need to name it worker.2 ? from the FTC pool geek website?
