I’m looking at a new rig/pc for mining only.
specs:
Asrock fatal1ty x79PRO Motherboard.
intel core i7 - 3820
Sharkoon T28 Red E Case (For airflow)
4 times Sapphire Dual-x R9 280x 3GB GDDR5 OC
Kingston valueram 4gb DDR3-1600
coolermaster hyper t4 active cpu cooler
Club 3d power suply 1200 watts
dvd player
500gb hard disk

Total price is about $2584,00

with the power supply 1200 watts i got my Power Cost ($/kWh): $0.16
Still need to get my money back and make some money off it.

I’m used to build pc’s but with mining you don’t need all the I-7 core stuff.
And i’m thinking, what on this list can i replace to lower that price?

You dont really need that i7 for mining, get a cheap i5.

Yes i have seen your build, but wood case will not work as my partner wont want that.
And some research i did showed that that motherbord of your cant support 4 of the cards i want.
Then agian i have the issue with heat if there are to close to another.

Need to rethink the entire thing, thanks :( :P

I can tell you right now,
Forget about sticking 4x 280X in a normal computer case. They WILL overheat within minutes, and only the lowest card will keep on trucking…

Normal 1 slot spacing inbetween is to little. i have tried. both on 7950/7970 and 7990… even two cards will overheat in an normal Xtra large case.
The most you can use two cards with minimum two slots inbetween and case panel off with a fan blowing on em… then they will not overheat.

4 cards, forget it. not beeing harsh but i have been down that road before and tried the most… ;D

I added a single Sapphire R9 280X Dual myself and its going@750kh/s with these settings

–gpu-engine 1070 --gpu-memclock 1500 -I 13 -w 256 -g 2 --thread-concurrency 8192

as soon as I go higher on either core or memory, hashrate drops/bounces.
750kh/s i need more than that or i really need to change the motherbord of it, to stay below budget.
heat and noise i dont worry about that, it will be in a empty house, but the wood, i think with heat it not a great combo… :-\

Ok! so no case or remove the sides to let air in/out with a fan on it.
How can i put those 4 cards in but not on the motherbord? d2 how do you do those wires?

powered risers.
look on nutnuts sticky in mining section.

buy unpowered extenders and mod:)

my experince is minimum 7cm between cards

No simple way to do it?

Great advice from the guys. You would do well to take it.

Issues with your spec are as follows.

T28 case only has 7 expansion slots, 4 of those cards need 8 (moot point anyway as they will fry in minutes)

Mobo - way overkill. You don’t need PCI-e x16 slots for mining. Use 1x to 16x risers (there’s no performance loss) I use the ga-990-fxa-ud3 and never had an issue.

CPU - :o take d2s recommendation. Go with a cheap amd chip and the mobo suggested.

RAM - cheap stuff is all you need

Cooler - use stock cooler on amd chip

Psu - here’s where most people trip up. Seasonic x1250 or xfx black 1250 (same PSUS in different case and fan) are THE ONLY PSUS I RECOMMEND FOR 4 card rigs. Trust me. Between Svenn and I, we’ve blown £1000s of equipment including crappy power coming from the psu that blew a 7970.

DVD - why? Install from USB stick

Hdd - fine, but you can boot from USB too so will be cheaper.

GPUs - the jury is still out but I think they’ll be fine. Technically they are 7970s but some people have had issues getting the same performance with the same settings. (I’ll have the same issue as I have 3x asus 280x matrix platinums being delivered tomorrow)

Now, for a 4 card rig, you MUST go open air or install an air mover in the case. There will be a good few people bleating out things like “with proper air flow you could cool it”… No. You can’t. Simples.

Powered risers, see my sticky. Very easy and will save you tears. Somewhere around here is a video of flames coming from one of Svenns rigs.

One thing you’ll learn as you embark on your mining journey is that there a lot of so called educated folk quoting theories and formulas. Then there are the guys that have been there and done it and successfully mined for years. Listen to both, if they contradict each other, listen to the guys that have done it. You won’t go wrong listening to Svenn and d2.

Powered risers if you don’t want to make your own: http://buyahash.com/?product=powered-pci-e-16x-riser

I actually got a bunch from them when they screwed up and sent me powered instead of non-powered and they are good quality.

Regarding NutNut and svennand:

If NutNut says it won’t work then it won’t work.

If svennand says it will catch fire, be prepared with marshmallows:
HAHAHA! ::)

what both nutnut and d2 said… ;D

Oh and btw heres what happens if you run 4x high end gpus on max without powered risers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KW7y4uGgYs&feature=player_embedded

And yeah, thats my mobo…
BTW, XFX 1250 PSU is cheaper, but the fan pretty crap compared to the seasonic one (makes an high pitch whining sound)

And will think of a new rig design.

Sorry i have always build pc’s how its used to be done, never modded it.

Will use my wood workers skills to build my self a case :-\
