It’s time for me to start looking at long term storage of some feathers so…

Paper wallets, I understand how to generate them, but I have a question.

I create a VM, download the client, and allow it to sync. At this point I would like to clone the client so it doesn’t take so long to sync next time I want to create a new paper wallet. So is the below a reasonable set of steps to take and would this give me the security I’m after?

Setup Stage
Build VM
Load client and sync
Close client, and delete wallet.dat
Clone VM, into a wallet template so to speak
Paper Wallet Creation
Clone template VM
Boot up, start client and allow to sync
Generate address
Export Private Key
Put in very safe place!!
Shut down VM and destroy it
Your thoughts please

UM

Hey uncle_muddy,

you dont need to sync your client to make a paper wallet.

1.Download the Client. (On a malware free computer)
2. Switch off the internet-connection
3. Dump the priv key of the address given in that wallet.
4. Send Feathercoins to that address
5. Print private key & address
6. delete wallet.dat file
7. Finish! Voila paper wallet created.

Thats how it worked for me :)

It may be obvious, but a paper wallet consists of simply printing out the private key.

The proper term here might be creating a cold wallet - that is a wallet where the private key exists printed on a piece of paper hidden under your bed only.

I understand the concept, and how to do it but for some reason I had a brain fart and decided that the wallet needed to sync before I could do it :-[

There should be an easier way to create a paper wallet. How about adding a page for this under the “Tools” menu on feathercoin.com?

I wouldn’t trust my hard mined FTC to be put into a paper wallet created on just any site. But if it would be here at feathercoin.com I would be fine with it.

I wouldnt trust ANY online-paper-wallet-creation. Just do it yourself :)

Would downloading the off-line version of the featheraddress tool on a clean machine followed by a format be suitable?

Assuming it is a valid address - Yes, but you should definitely do that in a VM that is set up with a JS capable browser and make sure that networking is completely broken once you get the html/js down.

I generated some at the weekend. I knocked together a rig from spare parts, installed ubuntu, downloaded the offline featheraddress HTML, pulled the network, generated the addresses. Binned the OS. I figured that would do?

I read threads like this to get tips for myself, as one should, but it annoys how everyone always talks in abbreviations which leaves me not knowing what to do ::)
