      Hi all,

I started mining a few days ago for the first time. My setup below:

      -Regular desktop computer
      -Intel quad core, 2.5GHz
      -4 GB ram
      -no hard drive
-OS is ubuntu 13.04 running on an 8GB USB stick
-regular Ethernet cable for DSL internet connection
-no monitor, connected with putty via ssh on my windows laptop

I tried using cgminer with my old 4350 GPU but I didn’t have any luck with even getting cgminer working, so after a lot of time messing with it I tried using cpuminer. Almost right away cpuminer started working! I’ve been running it for a few days now but it’s really really slow, I’m only getting like half a feathercoin per day. Of course thats really slow and not even worth the electricity which it cost to run the computer all that time, but I’m still in the learning phase so I’m happy. Next I plan to upgrade to a GPU and of course a power supply.

Unfortunately CPU’s won’t get you very far with the majority of coins out there, Feathercoin included. However it’s good you plan on buying a GPU, that’ll certainly help! If you haven’t already the tutorial section has some advice and instructions that might be helpful to you. Welcome the forums btw!

Unfortunatly amd4350 is not worth the electricity usage vs hashrate.
You’ll need 5xxx/6xxx/7xxx series to get some decent hashrate ;)

Anywhat, welcome to the comunity and if you need any help with cgminer this is the place to go:)

Cost to performance I would say avoid the 6xxx series. 58xx aren’t bad for cheap used cards but I would recommend going with 7950s or 7970s. The 7950s are probably the best cost to hash rate at the moment, but I love my 7970s.

The prices of the 79xx will be dropping a lot really soon when the 8xxx are released.

The prices have already started to drop, however, the desktop 8000 series is being skipped due to the GK110s and the 700 nvidia series. Look for prices to continue to go down as vendors look to liquidate remaining stock before the 9000 series launch.
