      Hey guys,

I’m currently thinking of investing in a mining rig. I have about 2000€ to invest. I pay 0,17€/kwh for electricity.
So is investing in a mining rig a good idea and if so, what hardware should I get?

      Cheers!

It’s a crapshoot…right now mining is hilariously profitable but go back a few weeks and it was barely worth it. No doubt it will not stay as good as it is today for very long.

        For the rig:

If you can find used 7970s that are reference cards (dark brown PCB with an AMD logo near the PCI-e fingers) those tend to be quite good at scrypt mining. Very good memory overclocks and hash rates. I run mine at 1.037 (0.96V actual) 1015/1750 for about 710 K/hs at around 200W (at the wall, includes PSU inefficiency)

They should be relatively cheap because of their age and loud coolers.

The others are a bit hit or miss, I had a blue PCB Sapphire card that hashed considerably lower, at higher power consumption and it’s also the only card to die on me (well it didn’t actually die for gaming, it still did that fine, it just wouldn’t mine anymore)

You need a separate space though because the reference coolers are pretty effing loud when you run them at high speed. I put them in an unused room, keep the window open and they are between 50 and 60C with the fans at 100%.
The lower the temp the lower the power consumption. Not sure how much the fans draw though.

          Thanks for the advice :)

I plan to buy eight to twelve sapphire 7950.
The psu would be the same as d2 uses for his rigs.
I’m not sure on what mainboard I should buy because I prefer intel over amd ;)

          • I’ll have to do some research on pcie risers because I still don’t know if I should get powered ones or not.

I hope to get my rig up and running till '14 ;D

            Another question:

Instead of buying eight 7950 would it be better to get four XFX Radeon HD 7990?
Could a seasonic 1250w psu handle four 7990?
Would that be more efficient in terms of kh/W?

read this link with what RIPPEDDRAGON did with his 7970s (280x) cards. This might be something to look at too considering how rare 7950s are becoming. If you have a 1500 watt psu you can squeeze 5 - 6 into one rig if this is correctly tuned.

I ordered my hardware today. I have settled for the Msi 280x.
Thanks for all the good advice from you guys! :)
