This is something i’ve been wondering. Do you have any first hand experience how much mining shortens gpu’s lifespan. Will my card last for 6 months, year, two?

I know that heat cycles are bad, but so is contiues heat.

I’ve been running one asus x9 280r for few weeks now, 700-720 khs with 99% load, steady 63 degrees celsius temp.

I would like to know the answer to that question too. been running 2x7970s at full load ,and temperatures of 73c on one card and 64 on the other , for a couple of days now.

It is very difficult to predict damage to the device because it has millions of components that can fail, not only in the GPU transistors, but tracks, capacitors, circuits annexes, internal sources, memory, etc…

They are designed to work long hours, and it is better to purchase good quality cards, Gigabyte MSI type.

          ;)

I don’t have any long term stats, and how would you define the normal lifespan of a GPU?

Generally I’d say as long as the tempereatures stay below 100°C the card will not be damaged directly, and on the long run, if the temperature stays below 80°C it should be fine.

The larger risk are changing temperatures with large differences, as then due to thermal extension and shrinking (is the the right term???) mechanical problems can occur and the contact between the chips and the cooling unit may loosen and the chips may burn.

So the trick is the keep the GPU at a constant temperature ;)

generally with computer components the cooler they run the longer they last. heat is the enemy to electronics. also a good quality psu will help a component last longer. I work in IT and very rarely see broken components except for maybe end user abuse but then again mining does run a gpu to the max 24/7. if you under clock and under volt a gpu it will more than likely increase the life of it.
