\[design\] Feathercoin.com Website Redesign project \* Discusion

I fully agree,
even there are only a few people willing to help in the moment, the number of participants may rise and version control becomes a nightmare. Not mentioning the coordination and integration work needed to merge different changed without a tool like Github.
There is no way around using Github

Nice project.
Keeping the number of active developers low is actually a good approach. To manny people working on the same project usually leads to chaos.
Keeping the front page welcomming, yet modern and informatice are indeed good intentions.
Good luck!

Just my opinion mind you, but a short video by Chris Ellis explaining crypto currency basics linked to a button on the front page. NO geek-speak just average internet user level folks can understand and after the video say “oh that’s really cool I want to be apart of that” Chris has a real knack for that sort of thing! Make it happen, they want to know, but they are use to easy!
peace,

I’m afraid a little bad news from me.
Time is a commodity at the moment. Work, life on the flipside of Feathercoin, FB commitments I’m failing on, and xmas on our doorsteps. All fighting for little bits of that commodity.
I have given this an awful lot of thought. I’m going to jump out of this collaborative approach to the reboot of the website. Creating a work of art collaboratively needs time and a platform to bring all the players and pieces together.
I don’t have that time.
That said, I have a vision I want to see through to the end. I have the tools and motivation to make it real.
So for the next week or two I am going to fly solo on this vision.
I have no delusions of it being used… it is up to you guys after you get to view it. If it gets to see the light of day… bonus. If it doesn’t I’ll have piece of mind knowing I did my bit with the time I have available to me.
I hope this causes no problems.
You’ve got my vote. I’ve said before that design by committee just ends up with lowest common denominator solutions. Zerodrama pointed out that swarming hive style is a better approach, and I think he was right on.
I also thought that was bang on. In fact it’s kind of what we had with the Do.com but then they decided to shut it down!

Drupal.org was designed by community… I’ll let everyone draw their own conclusions from that.I’ll gladly lend any of my technical expertise to the pot. I’ve worked for Rackspace in the past as a linux engineer in the “cloud” division, as well as for a isp/cloud provider in New Zealand. Currently I work for a large Asia-Pacific based company as a sort of “cloud” engineer focused on building out a platform on AWS for a new product.
Haha, I realize this doesn’t have much to do with a re-design per say, but if there are any hosting/scaling/distribution concerns feel free to ping me ;)
You need some rep.
+1
Your skills and enthusiasm will be well treasured here!
Hey Geoff. I completely understand and support you on this. All of us are obviously having difficulties with our personal/realworldjob/FTCjob schedule management. As much as I’d like to participate more in this, I just didn’t have time to play with CMS instally you set up :( This end of year season is killing me…
Also, I explained to you in Skype that my illusion of being a good team player is gone. Too many people just confuse me :) I usually do all the work on my own, with some additional instructions and guidelines from other people.
At this moment we don’t have much, but you obviously have a vision and that is awesome. Let’s see what you got and then fine tune it later?
+1 rep to you for having courage and godspeed!P.S. If you ever give me admin/FTC access - make sure that everything is backuped 3 times - I’m kind of person who makes million changes in code and constantly overwrite everything, and then remember tat it would be great to have that version from 10 days ago :D Man, I gotta lear to use Github or something :)
IMHO, you are a team player. Never seen you as anything less.
Anyway back to that cms ;)

Drupal.org was designed by community… I’ll let everyone draw their own conclusions from that.
If I NEVER have to work on another Drupal deployment, it’ll be too soon.
Drupal REALLY sucks. It’s a big memory hog, it’s written in PHP in a bunch of spagetti code (ever heard of encapsulation? classes? inheritance? No? Never mind…), it’s got a LONG history of security vulnerabilities (something that’s quite common with PHP), it’s hard to use and has a terrible learning curve, it breaks every time you upgrade it, it has NO dependency management (UGH!!!), it’s got terrible horrible awful data modeling (just about everything in Drupal is stored in arbitrarily structured nested arrays. Not even objects are stored as objects. Custom data types, for example, are stored and passed around as arrays. There is no inheritance, no has-many support, no way to elegantly share fields between different types), terrible support for version control and collaboration, and a kitten is tortured every time you choose it for your project.
Take the default markup spewed out by views, panels and blocks. It’s terrible, bordering on unusable. If I had a nickel for every time I had to click a “no markup†checkbox I could afford never working with Drupal again. Why not make the sensible assumption that the people who configure these elements know basic HTML, and design a system where “no markup†is the default until the developer *writes* some markup? Don’t get me started on collaborating on a “feature”.
Pointing out that Drupal is a community designed project is a GREAT example of why committees shouldn’t design projects… experts should.

Maybe a map of FTC global usage akin to Paul Butler’s fresco: https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=469716398919
