      I’ve seen a couple of sources for scrypt based ASIC miner’s but this is new to me.

          theres a lot of companys out there claiming roll outs mid december/january,just do a search for asic scrypt miner and you will see for yourself,i read one companys notes claiming they would limit sales to 1 per household and strictly monitor it,lol

            This sound like Scrypt might handle ASIC better than SHa256.

            I like the idea of open hardware development and the idea to ensure distribution of the network. There should be a standard, easy to set up, “Merchant miner” for instance…

              I am slightly confused, surely this is a FPGA, not an ASIC scrypt miner?

              The difference I understood is FPGA are built of more programmable “hardware bricks”, wheareas ASICS are made from custom chips, designed from scratch?

              The ASICs will out perform early FPGA’s, if Bitcoin histrory repeats.

                If these scrypt ASIC’s or FPGA’s come out as open source hardware, and anyone with a bit of electronics know how could build their own, I could see this as helping to level the playing field.

                It would be good if the average person could get a hold of these miners as opposed to just a select few with deep pockets.

                  that project is a rent a k/hash. its .90 per a k/hash. not worth it unless you have expensive power.

                    The cloud hashing is only at the start… I’m talking about how they’re gonna sell the chips and make the hardware design open source.

                    At 90 cents a khash/s, that’s not too bad. For a scrypt miner that does 1 Mhash/s and only cost’s $900, yet uses under 5 watts, that’s pretty damn good.

                    From what I can tell to build a 1Mhash/s scrypt mining rig, your looking at over a grand and a power consumption amount way beyond 500 watts.

                      Actually, you can build a 2+Mh/s GPU mining rig that consumes roughly ~700watts with 3 undervolted R9 280X’s. The upfront investment in hardware is still there though :-\

                        Ah ok. I was just using conservative estimates. In Australia we pay an arm and a leg for everything. Computer hardware is no exception.

                        I’ve come across a Gigabyte R9 270 oc 2 gb edition for under $250 [url=http://www.sbtech.com.au/gigabyte-r927oc-2gd-amd-hd-9270-pci-e-3-0-2gb-256-bit-gddr5-card/]http://www.sbtech.com.au/gigabyte-r927oc-2gd-amd-hd-9270-pci-e-3-0-2gb-256-bit-gddr5-card/[/url]

                        It’s my understanding that they pull over 400khash/s… I just want to start off with a single or dual gpu rig for my first build, any advice you could give?

                          I dont have any experiences with the 270X cards myself, but generally I would recommend to make sure the card is not voltage locked, if you pay more than $0.10/kwh.

                          I pay $0.33/kwh … so optimizing efficiency is my main concern. Thats why I happily sacrifice 5% hashing power for 15-20% savings in watts =)

                              Ive got two Gigabyte R9 270x’s doing 410kh/s.

                                Is that 410kh/s per card?

                                Also, do you think there’s a difference between the R9 270’s and the R9 270X’s…

                                Price wise the X’s are a fair bit more but do not seem to pull all that much more hashes according to the [url=https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison]Litecoin Hardware Comparison List[/url]
