\[Solved\] Dead GPU ??? \* Looks Dead

Can anyone tell me, how common is it to get a “dead GPU”?
I ask becuase I received 3*7970’s and when all 3 are plugged into the motherboard using powered risers only 2 spin up. I was in fact surprised that 2 actually spun up, I was expecting on the GPU’s that was connected to the monitor to spin as the others did not have any dummy plugs but 2 spun, I thought that the GPU’s needed dummy plugs in order to power up.
Anyway, I took the one that did not spin and attached it directly to the MB without and risers and any other GPU’s (I also did this with the other 2 and they worked and booted). Doing this with the one GPU’s did not allow the system to boot.
I will try again later by switching around the power cables but TBH, it looks like the GPU is dead, is this common?

[/quote]Im pretty sure, its a Gigabyte 990 UD3, its going laods of PCI slots. It should still work with the one card though.

Just has a quick search on the forum, people are running 3 and even 4 cards off the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 motherboard.
But taking the unspun GPU on its own, and sticking it into the MB without any other GPU’s should work.

Hi futureproof. You are correct, that board can take 4 cards. Since you tested each one individually and only the broken GPU had issues it is likely that you have a DOA card (dead on arrival). It isn’t that uncommon with GPUs. I would RMA it immediately.
[/quote]thanks mrfeathers. Yea I think I’ll give it one more go by switching the power connectors to the GPU, but I’m guessing like you said I’ll have to send it back.

Just a further update to this “dead gpu” in case this happens to someone else.
I plugged the GPU into the motherboard to test it one last time and the monitor display came up, so it was working but the fans were not spinning. So I looked around the GPU and it was the power fan connector on the GPU that had come out somehow, I reconnected it and now the GPU is working and spinning.
