Feathercoin Transaction Fees Explained?

Can someone knowledgeable on the subject of [b]Transaction Fees[/b] ([i]Feathercoin in particular[/i]) explain what factors determine the transaction fee amount?
Example …

[*]Amount set in client options (how is this used vs. what everyone else sets? purpose (pay miners)?)
[*]Amount of transaction (upper/lower limits?)
[*]Age of coin in wallet (why? age restrictions?)
[*]Anything else?
[*]Can FTC be sent without a fee? (amount? limits?)

Best I can do on the nitty-gritty of it.
1. This is where you can overide the preconfigured amount andd send with more/less txfee to raise/lower your priority.
2. Do not believe there is a limit.
3. Older Coins are seen as ‘higher priority’
5. Yes - But it might take a long time to confirm(hours, days, weeks even (unlikely)) -
