I’ve always considered myself to be a competent computer user. But I’m not, if I was to be more accurate, I’m actually a competent Windows user, and making the jump to Linux, makes me feel like my Dad must when hunting for the F key whilst peering over the top of his glasses in confusion. It’s safe to say, I don’t enjoy feeling like a novice and I’m usually only too happy to hop back in, rather than feel like a fish out of water.

So, Linux is the first challenge, give up Windows and move my day to day desktopping to Linux? That’s only part of the challenge, I’ll be happy enough with Libre or Open Office but I’ll need to find a suitable Photoshop replacement and oh dear… there’s the DAW and Audio to consider. It’s safe to say, it’s going to be an interesting experiment. But I’ll be recording my adventures en route.

Thanks, yep, it’s looking like GIMP is on the cards.

If I were making the jump I’d go for Ubuntu. Its pretty much the same as any other Linux except its a little bit more user friendly. (Unless you ask the unity haters Lol)
In all seriousness the new LTS version is pretty stable and will continue to get updates/patches for a few years.

I’d normally say go Libra over open office as its truly open source and community driven but open office has been handed over to Apache now so its personal preference (still Libra has had way more dev time in the last couple of years)

Yeah gimp is fantastic although I’m hardly a graphics guru but for the basic stuff I ever do gimp is much more than I’ll ever learn how to use Lol.

Games … Well Ubuntu software centre has a lot of free games on which is cool. Or steam is now supported on Linux so there are plenty games on there Lol. Good luck your making the right choice windows sucks!!

Ubuntu FTW for my mining, Windows for my gaming PC, though can’t wait to see the Steam OS once it’s launched, games and mining all in one, lovely

I’m running Elementary OS Luna. Very impressed so far.

Windows and Linux both have problems, but going open source was the best thing I ever did.

I like elementary so far, it’s nice and clean and consistent, but it has required tweaking to make it look less Mac.

I use Libre office at work, so the transition there has been effortless.

Not 100% sold on GIMP, it doesn’t seem as refined as Photoshop.

Still need to find an audio DAW and VSTi units.

Agreed on GIMP is not as refine as Photoshop, but its free and it does everything I need it to do.

Long since abandoned a free version of Photoshop I got with my printer for Gimp, which is all I use on Linux and windows at work and home.

That’s a bold statement. Could you elaborate? :)
