      Hello!

I’m planning to buy a desktop for mining. So can someone please suggest a suitable configuration for mining feathercoin (I may also mine other coins on it at the same time if such a thing is possible … )

I’d like to use this desktop only for mining, so I dont plan to use it for anything else except the occasional download from the net.

I’d appreciate any tips, help and pointers getting started, i.e, whether linux is better or windows, what CPU and other cards I should have (nvidia, etc?), whether I should do asic or gpu mining, and whether i can do both, (whats the difference? ) and also what I need to install, to get started on this desktop.

      Thanks in advance, science bless!
      nkshirsa.

        Hello @nkshirsa

It’s a bit hard to recommend the hardware you’ll need.

It depends on the money you want to spend upfront, mostly for the graphics card.

You can try to find a Desktop, where you can plug in two or more Graphics cards, so you get a better hash rate. On the other side you need to keep in mind, that a large graphics card used for mining needs a lot of power, which the build in power supply must be able to deliver. When I was mining with just one medium sized AMD graphics card, my PC took 420W from the power outlet.

Typically Desktop power supplies are not designed to deliver that much power.

I suggest you check out the mining category here in the forum to get an idea, what people are use for mining.

After you posted here you also can post in the other categories now.

          Hello,

thanks for your reply! I’m not sure why the graphics card is so important in mining, isnt it more about CPU speed ? Anyway, I will definitely take your recommendation, but can you recommend a particular graphics card, since Im just gonna setup the desktop from scratch, any configuration help will help me because I’ll get that particular configuration and set it up at home.

I’m connecting it to a regular power switch and the electricity in my buildings pretty stable, so I guess it shouldn’t have an issue with power fluctuations etc.

More importantly, how much ram do i need, or on motherboard memory, any cpu in particular (intel/amd/etc), and what else could i buy to help maximise?

another question i had was, is feathercoin the best coin to mine nowdays, ? Are there potentially others I can mine at the same time? Is it difficult mining multiple coins at once?

i look forward to your reply, and thank you a lot for your help so far !

[FAQ] Why can’t I mine Feathercoin on a CPU?

You can mine Feathercoin with a CPU, it will just be slow.

Cryptography is faster on a GPU than a CPU, if it is programmed. It is faster on an ASIC than a GPU, but to do that the algorithm that has to be programmed and designed / manufactured in hardware.

Feathercoin deliberately moved to Neoscrypt cryptographic alogorythm because it takes more memory to run than the Bitcoin or Litcoin ASICs, and therefore could only be run on a CPU. Feathercoin did not move to Neoscrypt until a GPU version was programmed, in this case paid for by FTC admin (@Calum).

@wrapper thanks ! so a desktop with 2 graphics cards (reocmmendations? nvidia geforce?) would be fine to mine ftc ?right?

Sorry, but I can’t give a good advise here, as I don’t know exactly which graphic cards are up to date at the moment and which ones have the best hash per watt power ratio.

I move the thread to the mining area, so it can be better found by the miners and hopefully one of them will respond
